The Film Talk: Coming soon to Blu-Ray: Ingmar Bergman’s The Magician

Yet for me, it’s Bergman at his absolute best — an illusive, atmospheric, soulful shadow-show on skepticism and spirituality. On October 12th, the film will be released by Criterion on Blu-Ray and dvd for the first time on either format. I first fell in love with the film via an aging vhs copy and later purchased the Criterion edition on laserdisc.

Hey there Dear Listener – had a lovely time blogging/tweeting/facebooking (?) on the set of MOTHER’S RED DRESS today, (see the original post here) – had to travel all the way to a Donut Shop in Ontario but it was worth it. Luckily ‘Red Dynamite’ delivered me to the set without too much trouble, though there was a ‘sloshing’ sound continually emanating from behind the dashboard that was strangely unsettling in a HP Lovecraft kind of way.

Magic Lantern Film Blog: 31-Day Movie Meme: by Peter Eramo

I see that all of my fellow film bloggers have been participating in the 31-Day Movie Meme, and it looked too fun NOT to participate, so I came up with my own responses to the “lightning-round” type questions being posed. Readers of this site might see some repeat answers, but if it’s a film favorite, [...]

The Film Talk: I’M NOT THERE: Song of Myselves

Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There. is the antibiopic. Who is Bob Dylan? We get six answers, one for each phase in the artist’s life, each “Dylan” played by a different person with a different name, all metaphysically connected. What is Dylan’s life story? It’s America, a freewheelin’ carnival loosely pasted together, impasto textures only roughly adhering to the papier-mâché component. So why is Dylan important? Who said he was? I’m Not There. isn’t about Bob Dylan.

Roger Ebert: I'm Still Here / *** (Unrated)

"I'm Still There" (Unrated, 108 minutes). A sad and painful documentary that bears witness to the self-destruction of Joaquin Phoenix. His famous announcement that he would retire from acting and become a hip-hop artist was believed by some to be a hoax. Not on the basis of this film by his brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, who shows him spiraling out of control into cocaine, pot and unhinged narcissism. The film has extraordinary access to private and privileged moments. Three stars.
