I have revisited the benefits of the AMC Stubs card after many commenters have either explained their poor experiences or changes to the program.
After moving back home to Valrico, FL the predominate theater chain is AMC. Their AMC Stubs card is the only customer loyalty program for a cinema chain that I am aware of that requires a payment. For $12 dollars a year, they provide you with an AMC Stubs card for you to acquire points for each dollar you spend on tickets and concessions. Each time you reach $100, you’re given a $10 AMC gift card.
The AMC Stubs card also gives you upgrades on popcorn and drinks, but this is a moot benefit for me as I do not partake in the over-priced, poor tasting, unsubstantial food available at most theater chains. For a family, however, this may be a very attractive offer as the amount spent on food may be twice the admission price.
Looking back at my receipts since the beginning of 2012, I have spent over $300 in movie tickets. Granted some of them were from local film societies and indie theaters, but this AMC Stubs program can still net a few free tickets throughout the year and save a few bucks on online purchases in the meantime.
Depending on what times you see a film (matinee, early-birds, night screenings) and the medium that you see films in (3D, IMAX, etc.) your return on investment will hit on the second threshold.
It also does not hurt that the purchase of your AMC Stubs card goes towards your points. If you forgot your rewards card when you go to the theater, you have 30 days to return with your original ticket stub and have it added to your card. Since I keep all my stubs for accounting purposes as a film critic, I have almost reached my first $100 threshold.
There are certainly some criticisms of this program, and typically I am among those who are critical of such reward programs that require a purchase. AMC used to have the MovieWatchers card, which was free, but also did not have the same amount of benefits, let alone the fee-free online ticket purchases.
If you are aware of your spending habits, then you should be able to determine whether this or other customer loyalty programs are viable solutions. It also would not hurt to combine your rewards purchase with a rewards credit card.
Customer loyalty programs are designed to keep you spending at a specific brand and location, and to trick your brain into thinking that it is just fine to over spend. If you keep this in mind, and you make an educated determination on the amount spent on a certain industry and chain, a loyalty card, especially one that cost money to join, might be an excellent investment.
I am going to try out the service and report back on the usefulness for the AMC Stubs program. I will also be doing a write-up on a few other customer loyalty programs that exist at brick and mortar stores that may benefit cinephiles.
Edit: AMC has released an app for Android, iOS, and Windows phones that allows you to link your AMC Stubs account to see how far away you are from your next threshold and even display your account's barcode to make it easier. Not much functionality, but it can be convenient.
Disclosure: This is not an advertisement, but a sincere review of the AMC Stubs reward program. There will be subsequent posts about this program as time goes on. Also, I am not an AMC employee or representative, I'm a film critic who writes insightful movie reviews. I cannot help you recover lost cards, help your retrieve your account information, and I do not have sympathy for you if you do not read the program's terms and conditions, and therefore have your rewards or membership expire or revoked. I do care about your stories regarding this program, please leave a comment below.

When our family went to the movies last month, our receipt let us know that we had reached the $10 reward balance. The cashier also let us know our Stubs card was expiring soon but could not let us know what that expiration date was (Really? How hard is it for the computer to display the expiration date?) A few weeks later, my husband and I returned for a date night and was told our card had expired and the reward dollars and points no longer valid. We also limit our food purchases at the movies for the same reasons you do so we did not use our Stubs card at the concession too often. So, after spending $12 for this "reward" program, I really feel we simply lost $12 on entertainment this year. We'll reward ourselves by NOT participating in this program again and spending our entertainment dollars elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing your story with us.
I agree that it is dishonest of them to not provide you with the expiration date of your membership. I even looked at my own account online and on the AMC app program to see that they do not provide that information at all. The only way to estimate the membership expiration is through the transaction history.
I'll certainly discuss this issue in any updates I make regarding this program.

I've been thinking about getting the amc card for awhile, but this is the most rational post ive seen about it. You make great points, although I dont think i'll be getting it. I just dont see enough films a year to warrant getting it. kudos

The old moviewatcher card DID get fee free online ticket purchases, at least in Dallas.
I had the stubs, and had 24 dollars worth of rewards saved up. We were going to use them for two tix and some popcorn/soda...but when I got to the theater to do this, we wee informed our card had expired (no notice at all!!!) and the 24 dollars was gone, poof, it disappeared.....then they had the brass to ask if I wanted to renew it for 12 dollars!!
The old Moviewatcher program was fantastic, this new stubs deal truly is a rip-off.

Tony,
This seems to be a trend in complaints about the program. They do not explain that points expire so quickly. I'll be discussing this further in a future post. But essentially, you have 90 days to use up each $10 in rewards, and they expire when your card expires. Thus, you cannot build up points, they must been used within 90 days. They do not notify you when your card expires.
tony

True, but all of these points had been earned in the past 90 days, but when the card expired, so did the points!!!!

It is unfortunate that AMC does not readily provide expiration dates to Stubs customers. The only way to know when you bought the card is to look at what your earliest stub is when you log in online.
Regardless, it is still important to read the guidelines and rules to all these programs. By doing so, you'll know how to get the most out of the system.

I have had the carrd now for 10 months. I have received $30 in Rewards and 14 concession upgrades (I am the mom of 2 and we go to the movies every few months or so...but with kids popcorn and drinks are part of the 'experience'). I registered the card online right away. I get an email when I recieve a reward and another 2 weeks before it expires. I got an email 60 days before the renewal was due. I was even allowed to renew online.

Don't bother with this gimmick. Benefits expired without notification; no mention of benefit at the time of purchase at box office. Just think about it -- why should anyone pay a fee in order to receive discounts?

I just received email notifying me that my Stub Card expires in 60 days & the exact date. I do not see the problem, they also notified me when current rewards would expire and can renew online using rewards.

Im not sure why some people had issues with their rewards expiring. Are you saying the rewards expired or your Stubs card expired and you tried to use the rewards? My stubs card expired last week and I found this site trying to search for a promo code to renew. The site said I had $23 until my next reward, even though my card was expired. I then renewed and it said I have $11 left until my reward. That means I will get $10 back, essentially my fee for year, minus $2. I will then save money on concession upgrades and online ticket purchases until Nov 2013. I normally dont use reward cards, let alone ones that charge a fee. To me, the savings is a no brainier if you go to the movies at least once a month.

Exactly! Essentially, if you know your spending habits, you'll be able to quickly understand whether this card is worth it or not.

If you have a smartphone and you download the AMC application you will find the AMC stubs section. There it will CLEARLY tell you when your card will expire and when the rewards will expire as well.

I have been using this rewards program since last year and I always get notifications when my points are expiring and the date when it expires. The cashiers always ask me if I want to use my rewards or upgrades. It also counted down the days my card would expire and I renewed it today. I go to the movies a lot and even allow my friends to use my card because it benefits me more. This program sends me emails about promotions and free tickets and reminds me when everything expires. You just have to be responsible and log on the website and it will tell you how many rewards, upgrades and when it all expires or at least sign up for the email alerts.

If you are told you have rewards available, buy a gift card worth the value of the reward and then you won't get screwed with the reward expiring and you will still have the gift card if your membership expires. Buying gift cards with rewards is part of the program but employees are told to never suggest this.

That is a smart choice. I'm not sure if they can do that, but I'll ask next time I go.

Did they change the rules to where you can't buy gift cards?
Anonymous
| December 13, 2012 - 12:56pm
I haven't tested it yet but in their new terms and conditions I had to accept it did state that rewards can not be used towards gift card purchases anymore. But I figured I would still try and see what happens.

I asked the person at the box office last time I went, and they no longer offer that option. However, the sales person was very sympathetic to stubs users who would forget about their rewards and would recommend the gift card option.

I frequently visit AMC theaters on a regular basis and I think that the amc stubs program works great.... you can set up notifications by text and they send me reminders of when I'm going to reach my 10 dollar gift certificate and when my rewards are about to expire.....

I frequent the AMC in my area (BURBANK) and, I watch at least 2 movies a month. I bring along my girlfriend and, probably one of her little brothers too if something good is showing.
I have netted over 50 dollars in rewards this year and few concession upgrades, I do Admit that it is hard to remember what rewards you have but, if your going as frequently as I do the cashiers always let you now what your balance is and, how far away you are from your next goal. All in all the benefits outweigh any issues people have because they go to the movies 3 times a year and wonder why they have no rewards, go to the movies more frequently stop complaining so much about how your bored and enjoy your life and go watch a movie there are lots of them get a girlfriend and but the tickets at costco they are super cheapo, then you be like me and see all your favorites on the big screen and have a good time out with someone, thats the whole point of this program.

If you have the app for your phone, at the least on an android, you can click on the picture of your card and it shows you your card number as well as your expiration date. So it does show it you just need to know where to look. Hope this helps everyone with the expiration problem.

What do you mean by "tickets at Costco they are super cheap". If you buy them from Costco, how do you you get rewards for that on your AMC card?
Aaron Weiss
| January 6, 2013 - 1:22am
You can't. I first heard of the incredible cheap AMC tickets at Cosco from the previous commenter. It specifically says on the Cosco site that the AMC tickets cannot be redeemed for points on the AMC Stubs card.
However, you do get a deal for AMC tickets at Cosco.
Jarrett

That has not been my experience. I always give my Costco tickets to the cashier with my stubs card and the cost of the ticket I added to my rewards balance. I have gotten at least $40 in rewards since I have first gotten the stub card and I only use Costco tickets and usually buy one popcorn per visit and nothing else.

I have been a member of the AMC stubs program since December 2011 because they offered it for 50% off i.e. $6.00.
I usually buy my tickets using the AMC gold experience pass from Costco and up till October 2012 I got Stub credit for my purchases (whatever was the price of ticket for that show)
However lately I was rewarded nothing. When I contacted them they said purchases with AMC passes are not valid for AMC stubs credit. I told them I am not asking you to credit me for full amount but I should credit for amount I paid for the passes because just like cash or credit card AMC passes are form of payment which were not free.
Given that they do not value my business (I am not only paying for their loyalty program but also committing to take my business to AMC by pre-paying by purchasing their passes) they have lost both my business now. I am more than happy to visit the dine-in chains in my neighborhood with their great Groupon deals. ($6 for movie ticket and unlimited refill drink).
Even if your only option is AMC, please do consider getting the Gold/Silver experience passes.
100 dollars spent at AMC = 12(membership) + approximately 9 movie tickets = 10 dollars in rewards = 100 USD = 10 movie tickets
While for 10 movie passes = 10 * 8 (GOLD passes) = 80 USD
= 10 * 6.50 (SILVER passes) = 65 USD.

If they used to allow for AMC Gold Experience Tickets to apply towards rewards points, they no longer do. While the AMC Gold Experience Tickets are indeed a deal, it does say on the item page at Cosco that "These tickets do not apply towards the AMC Stubs™ Rewards Program." That is clearly written on the page. It is not hidden at all.
If you did more calculations, which you have not, you will see that the membership is not a ripoff, if you know your spending habits, use the app, and set reminders for your rewards expiration. If anything, this proves that you did not read my blog post. If you don't take these precautions, you end up being a poor consumer.
Now, since you were able to get your Stubs card for 50% off, you enjoyed a much large ROI. Other than AMC possibly making some changes, if you spend at least $200 or more at AMC, you will have paid for the cost of the card at full price.

I'vw been going to AMC movies for years and often, at least once a month with my wife or by myself. So they easily sold me into buying AMC stubs loyalty program, and after a year of using it, I found it to be a ripoff. I forgot to take the card with me sometime when we go to the movies, but even that we still spent to enough to get the $10 rewards, but when I want to use my reward recently, they told me my card is no longer good, the account is closed, but they can't tell for sure when it has expired. So it's a waste of $12 bucks that could have been use to buy a ticket. After all the money I spent at AMC and using AMC stubs. This is a disloyalty program by AMC. They should stop offering this gimmick of AMC stubs card to theirs customers. This is a lousy loyalty program which they shouldn't even call it that. Because it drive loyal customers away. We would now rather drive a little further to Showcase cinema with free reward card.

Sounds like your issues could have been remedied by:
1) Calculating your spending habits against the benefits
2) Signing on to your AMC account to find out when you purchased the card
3) Use the AMC mobile app to have your card number available
4) Retain your ticket stubs to have them entered after your visit

I have been s Stubs member since they started the program, and a MovieWatcher member before that. I have been pleased with the program until recently, have saved quite a bit overall, and the program has accomplished its goal in that I have gone to AMC theaters exclusively even though I have other choices in my area.
However, the recent change in which Stubs credit is no longer given for the tickets purchased at Costco really makes me feel ripped off. I will probably renew once more and see how it goes, but I'm not sure it will pay off now that the Costco tickets don't count. I will probably start patronizing the other theater chains more frequently, as with one fell swoop, AMC has removed much of my incentive to patronize them.
As for those who complain about their cards and points expiring without notice, this has got to be their own fault. I have always received multiple email notices when I have rewards credit set to expire or when my Stubs card was nearing expiration. In fact, I received such a notification just today. If you change your email address and don't update it on AMC's site, or if you don't bother to check your spam folder for email of value, you have only yourself to blame. If AMC did anything more to alert of expiring cards and rewards, they'd be crossing a line into harassment.

If you don't go to the movies often enough to use the earned rewards before they expire, then you have no business buying into the program to begin with. If you are complaining about rewards expiring then you are admitting you are inept. Do you pay your bills late too and then complain about late fees? It's common sense people.
If I only earned one $10 reward it would be worth for the ability to hand them the card and not have to listen to the sales pitch every freaking time. I'd consider that alone $2 well spent.
I go to the movies every chance I get, preferring the matinee prices whenever possible and I've saved $50/year. The rewards could and should be higher, but a 15% discount for participating is a no-brainer.

Stubs is a good deal, especially if you go to the movies twice or more a month with a family and pay the standard box office ticket fee along with costs of concessions. However, if you purchase your tickets via AMC Silver or Gold discounts, like I and many do, and avoid the over-priced concessions, Stubs is a total waste of money. Consequently, I gave up as participant of the program when I found out, via the fine print, that Silver and Gold discounts are not eligible for earning points - a significant issue that the AMC employees will neglect to mention during their sale's pitch.

Call and check your account because they are probably swiping your card, but you are NOT getting credit for it. It pays to be informed.
